THE FILMMAKER
Fernando Franco was born in Seville in 1976. “Voice Messages” is his first short film. Currently he is in postproduction of his second film, and will soon begin filming his third.

SYNOPSIS
Nine-year-old Mila is dying of cancer. She has accepted her situation, but is more worried about her mother who cannot come to terms with losing her only child. Mila tries her best to comfort her, especially now that her mother is expecting a baby who she may never meet. At the same time she slowly starts to drift into a fantasy world that opens up new hope in her.

THE FILMMAKER
Piotr Ryczko was born in Szczecin, Poland, in 1974. He studied Filmmaking at the Polish National Film School.

SYNOPSIS
The animated film presents a funny, interactive approach to story-telling. Mila is an 8-year old girl who loves telling stories, especially about Cyprien and the big bad King Toupouloupou, a Minotaur-like pet. The fearless young Cyprien marches straight into the King’s maze and tackles the enormous creature head on. He soon discovers that the monster is a harmless creature with a sweet tooth who would sooner eat candy than the prisoners.

THE FILMMAKER
Virgile graduated from Gobelins, Le’ Cole de I’image, and began his carrier at Planet Nemo Animation. He is the creative director of the animated project, “Bali” and co-directed the series that aired on France 5 and Playhouse Disney in France. “Bali” has received the Gemini award for the best animated series (Canada, 2007), as well as the young audience prize for the best children-intended animated series at the Cordoba International Animation Festival (Spain, 2007).

Imran Patel graduated from Karachi University with a degree in communication design, majoring in film and photography. His short film “Khamoshi” was screened to critical Acclaim at the 5th KaraFilm Festival and “Duniya Goal Hai” at the 6th KaraFilm Festival.

SYNOPSIS
“Narmeen” is about the loss of identity, humanity and association in the trying times of partition. A young woman, Noor, grieves the death of her daughter, and is torn between moving to a new country and holding on to the last vestiges of memory and the sense of identity that she has. Unable to come to terms with reality, she exists in a dreamlike state. A Sikh man moves into the neighbourhood with his young son. Noor takes a liking for the young boy but her attempts at befriending him are blatantly thwarted by the embittered father. Will humanity prevail in the times of collective madness?

THE FILMMAKER
A graduate in mass media and mass communication from Delhi University, Dipti Gogna joined the Film and Television Institute (FTII) in 2004. During her second year at FTII, she was awarded a scholarship by the One World Broadcasting Trust (OWBT), UK, and shot a documentary, “A Call to Far” in London, Pune and Gurgaon. She graduated from FTII in April 2008 and is currently working as an associate screenplay writer and assistant director.

Katrin Gebbe was born in Germany in 1983. She received her bachelors of design in visual communication at the Enschede Academy of Visual Arts in the Netherlands. She is enrolled at a postgraduate film studies program at the Hamburg Media School in Germany.

SYNOPSIS
Tom returns home from a mission as a war-photographer. His experiences have changed him. His reintegration into Western society is a failure and all his relationships fall apart. He can no longer figure out where he belongs.

THE FILMMAKER
Michael Venus was born on December 10th, 1976 in Jena, East Germany. Instead of joining the army, he spent time organizing video workshops for autistic children. He studied visual communication at the Bauhaus-University, Weimar and experimented in video art, commercials, radio dramas and short films. Between 2005 and 2006 he served as producer for promotion and design at the Children’s Channel, Kika. He has served as a professor at the Hamburg Media School since 2006.

Sisters Adela and Bernarda had fought. Adela discovers a train ticket that her sister has kept in her purse for 40 years. Seeking closure on her past, Adela catches the train that Bernarda failed to take on a desperate search for freedom.

THE FILMMAKER
Julian Quintanilla Badajoz was born in 1975. He previously lived in Madrid, but since 2005 has lived in Paris. He has studied cinema at the Universite de Paris and at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático and the Conservatorio Europeo de la Escritura Audiovisual in Madrid. He has been awarded the Beca de Fotografía of the Ministry of Culture, and was granted a scholarship to participate in the masters of direction course at the European Center for Young Directors (France).

SYNOPSIS
In Nosh-e-Jan (Bon Appétit) the viewer is invited to witness the ritual of passing and consuming secrets within an Afghan-American Family. The ritual serves as an outlet of expression for the women that bear the secrets, without violating the strict code of keeping face. The secrets are shared in three different languages (Pushto, Dari, and English), each of which signifies a different generation in the family. While the women are the main transmitters of the secrets, the impact on men must not be forgotten.

THE FILMMAKER
Gazelle Samizay was born in 1981 to a family of teachers and social activists in the midst of the communist invasion in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her family was forced to leave the country, fleeing to the United States. As a multimedia artist, Samizay’s photography and video works have been exhibited in both the U.S, and abroad. Samizay is the recipient of numerous grants and awards such as the Mary Gates Research Grant, Arizona Artist Guild scholarship and the Medical Grant. Currently, Samizay is pursuing her Master in Fine Arts at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

A being, Ossudo, suffers a metamorphosis. Its bones turn into flesh and its flesh turns into bones. Marlisa, a naive girl, approaches Ossudo and asks him to become her life companion. He answers with a sad smile. Both meet at the park everyday.

THE FILMMAKER
Julio Alves is a writer/director. He made his directorial debut with “O Despetador” (The Alarm Clock) in 1996. He has made a number of short films since and was an assistant director on a feature film in 1994.

SYNOPSIS
Maruja is a sad woman who lives in a lower middle class neighbourhood. One day two men knock on her door and request five minutes of her time to offer a deal that will be, beyond a shadow of doubt, beneficial to her. The pair suggests she convert to Satanism. In view of Maruja’s astonishment and amazement at their proposal, the two men move on to explain to her the advantages of embracing such a doctrine. When Maruja signs the contract with the devil, the story takes a sudden and dramatic turn, as the Satanists do not exactly fulfil what they had promised to her.

THE FILMMAKER
Juan F. Padron was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1965. He studied advertising at the School of Applied Arts of Las Palmas. He has directed several short films, including “The Last Excursion” which won an award at the 2nd international film festival of Gran Canaria.

THE FILMMAKER
Saba Khan graduated from the National College of Arts with a distinction in Painting in 2005. Since then she has been working as a full time artist. In 2006 she won the best painting award from
Al-Hamra Arts Council, Lahore. In 2007 she received the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary and participated in an artist’s residency program in Italy.
